With gratitude and admiration, Duke German Studies remembers Helga Bessent (April 4, 1926—May 1, 2026) and honors her lasting contributions to our community. At Duke University, Helga Wilde Bessent was a longtime teacher and academic leader in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literature. After joining Duke in 1965, she directed undergraduate studies, coordinated the German language program, advised the national German honor society, and served on major university committees. She also pioneered a computerized language-learning database and helped establish Duke’s study-abroad program in Erlangen, Germany, along with a fund that later became the Helga Wilde Bessent Endowment. Her contributions continue to support German studies and teaching excellence at Duke.
