Paul Bosonetto has completed a German major in the German Studies Track. Paul is a kind, funny, and very devoted student of German, and someone who really found his academic home at Duke in the German department – we could not have been happier and prouder to have him! Paul will be joining his father working in residential real estate at Beverly-Hanks & Associates in Asheville, NC. They will work as a father & son team, starting almost immediately after graduation!
Jeremy Clift has completed a German major in the German Literature and Culture Track. He also completed a major in Psychology and a minor in Evolutionary Anthropology. Jeremy studied in Berlin in the summer and fall of 2013. This was, both personally and intellectually, a truly rewarding experience for him. Jeremy has landed a terrific job for next year, working at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. In the long term, he is thinking about graduate studies in clinical psychology. Jeremy’s German major played a huge role in realizing these goals!
Amanda Coulson-Drasner has completed a German major in the German Studies Track. She also completed an interdepartmental major in Political Science and Sociology, and a minor in Neuroscience. Amanda spent a semester studying in Berlin in 2012. Amanda was awarded a scholarship from the DAAD to do research on sustainable farming and cooperative systems in Berlin next year. She is very excited to be back to Berlin in the fall! Amanda plans to return to the States for business school the next year or the year after. Amanda cannot be here today, but let’s congratulate her for her work and achievements in her absence.
Christopher Evans has completed a German major in the German Studies Track. He has also completed a major in Economics. He spent the fall 2013 semester in Berlin. Chris will be working for Citigroup as a Markets and Securities Services Analyst starting this summer, where he will stay for at least the two-year duration of its analyst rotation program. In the longer term, he hopes to pursue an MBA and work abroad in Germany.
Daniel Graber has completed a German major in the German Literature and Culture Track. He has also completed a major in Economics. Daniel studied in Berlin in the fall of 2013, and he is a double major in Economics and German. After graduation he will be working in New York City full-time for BNP Paribas, where he interned last summer.
Michael Kaelin has completed a German major in the German Studies Track. Michael studied in Berlin in fall 2013 and is graduating as a History and German major. He wrote his thesis, entitled Coequal Heirs: The Civil War, German Identity, and Memory, on the effects of the American Civil War on German-American identity. He is taking a gap year, after which he will pursue a PhD in history, with a focus on 19th-Century American history and the evolution of ethnicity in the United States.
Reed McGinley-Stempel has completed a German major in the German Studies Track, as well as a major in Public Policy Studies. Reed studied in Berlin in fall 2013. Reed has received a Fulbright ETA grant to Germany for next year. After that, in the fall of 2016, he will begin at Bain & Company as an associate consultant. After the Fulbright and Bain, Reed’s current – but not definite – long-term goal is to pursue a JD/MBA.
Elizabeth Nadler has completed a German major in the German Literature and Culture Track, as well as a major in English and a minor in Theater Studies. Elizabeth spent the full academic year 2013-2014 in Berlin, a sign of her passion for German and her commitment to cultural understanding and exchange. Elizabeth will be attending the National Theater Institute’s Theatermakers Summer Intensive Program at the Eugene O’Neill Theater this summer, and hopes to be working in a theater internship in New York City this fall. She also plans to continue her German education, and will be working towards a translators’ certificate in the coming year.
Cassidy Pomeroy-Carter has completed a German major in the German Literature and Culture Track, as well as a major in Biology and a Certificate in Marine Sciences. Cassidy studied in Berlin in summer 2012 and fall 2013. She is an extremely talented and hard-working student of German! Next year, Cassidy will be working with veterinarians in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she plans to apply to veterinary school and explore the possibility of applying to a combined DVM/PhD program.
Benjamin Spilsbury has completed a German major in the German Literature and Culture Track, in addition to a major in Mechanical Engineering. Ben studied in Berlin in spring 2013 in the Engineering track, meaning he took intensive German classes in Berlin and then enrolled directly in Engineering courses in Berlin. Ben is a very perceptive, thoughtful, and talented student of German – open to all kinds of ideas and questions. For next year, Ben has found an exciting job that combines both of his majors at BMW in South Carolina, where he will be working for at least a couple of years, after which he will hopefully transfer to Germany.
Krishtha Spuglio will soon be completing a German major in the German Literature and Culture Track, as well as a major in Political Science. She spent this entire academic year, 2014-2015, in Berlin.
Jasmine Huannan Wu
Jasmine Wu has completed a German major in the German Studies Track, and another major in Mathematics and a minor in Economics. Jasmine studied in Berlin in fall 2013. She will be working for Swiss Re, an reinsurance company headquartered in Zurich, after graduation. She will first train for 1 month in Zurich, where she hopes to use her German a little bit, and then begin work on a series of actuarial exams that can take up to 10 years to complete – so those are Jasmine’s short and long term plans!
Qi Zhou completed a major in the German Studies track, in addition to a major in Economics. She will be doing consulting with Altman Vilandrie & Company in Boston.
Christiane Demack completed a minor in German, a major in Literature, and a minor in Education. She is planning to pursue a Master’s Degree in English Literatures and Cultures in Tübingen, Germany next year.
Heather Durham completed a minor in German and Education, a major in Public Policy Studies, and a certificate in the Study of Ethics.
Mengchao Feng completed a minor in German, a major in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and received a certificate in Film, Video, and Digital Studies. He also did the Duke in Berlin Engineering program in spring 2012. After graduation, Mengchao will be working on a start-up project in China that helps Chinese high schoolers identify colleges in the US that suit their backgrounds and interests.
James Fergusoncompleted a minor in German, as well as a major in Environmental Sciences. Next year he will be working with Environmental Resources Management in Pennsylvania as a "staff scientist." The company is global in reach and does a lot of work in Germany, and James hopes to eventually do some work in Germany as well.
Stefan Fertala completed a minor in German and a major in Mechanical Engineering. He did the Duke in Berlin Engineering track in spring 2013. After graduation he will be moving back out to California to do brewery operations and management for Anheuser-Busch.
Alexa Levy has completed a minor in German and a Major in Visual Arts. She studied in Berlin in fall 2013.
Erick Lowe has completed a minor in German, a major in Mechanical Engineering, and another minor in Energy Engineering. He studied in Berlin on the Engineering Track in spring 2013. He has also served as the energetic co-president of German Club! Erick is hoping to attend engineering grad school in Munich, but he also has a job offer from Schlumberger doing engineering, and until then he plans to backpack through South America.
Andrew Lynch has completed a German minor and a major in Biomedical Engineering. He did the Duke in Berlin Engineering program in Spring 2013.
Kevin Nikolaus has completed a minor in German and major in Mechanical Engineering, as well as a certificate in Energy and the Environment. Next year he will be working on the Yukon in Alaska.
Marquese Robinson has completed a minor in German and psychology, and a major in Political Science. He plans to stay in the Triangle area next year, working as a college advisor for high school students. In the long term, he hopes to go to law school.
Brandt Scheidemantel has completed a minor in German, a major in Romance Studies, and a certificate in Markets and Management. He studied in Berlin in the summer of 2014. Brandt plans on initially working in hospitality management in Chennai, India and eventually pursuing an MBA in multinational management.
Samuel Schloss has completed a minor in German and a major in Political Science. He studied in Berlin in the fall of 2013. After graduation he is planning to work at Barclays in New York.
