Study Abroad Opportunities

Duke offers two of the best study-abroad programs available: the summer program and the fall and/or spring semester program in what is today one of the most exciting and cosmopolitan cities in Europe -- Berlin. The Duke-in-Berlin Semester programs takes place in both the fall and spring. In the fall it is at the Humboldt University from the beginning of September to the middle of December.

Duke in Berlin was founded at the Freie Universität of West Berlin in 1988 before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since 1990 the fall semester has taken place at Humboldt Universität in former East Berlin while the spring-summer semester countinues to be based at the Freie Universität. In the fall, students attend Duke University courses taught by German faculty and by the program's Resident Director. In the spring, students take most courses at the Freie Universität directly, while qualified engineering students may take courses at the Technische Universität Berlin. The program helps students advance their language skills, deepens their understanding of German culture, and broadens their grasp of the social sciences, art history, and technology in a German and European context.

Non-Duke students may enroll in the summer program via Rutgers University, if they prefer; however, only those non-Duke students enrolled via Duke will receive a Duke transcript.
