Overview

Nathan received his B.A. in philosophy from Western Washington University in 2014. After spending two years in Bregenz, Austria as an English teaching assistant, he joined the Carolina-Duke Program in 2017. Nathan’s research focuses on narrative prose from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a particular interest in realism and modernism. His dissertation considers the interrelationship of narrative and walking as models for human life and how the permutation of those models, as seen in the works of Adalbert Stifter, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Robert Walser, are constitutive of modern subjectivity and temporality. Nathan has also published articles on Johann Wilhelm Ritter, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Hermann Hesse.
